Typically, right after the loss of your limb, your journey to rehabilitation starts. Limb loss causes many changes in your life, both negative and positive. It is essential to use the positive and correct the negative the best you can. With so many changes it is vital to surround yourself with a team of professionals you are comfortable with and will help you to reach your goals.

With limb loss, you use much more energy to do everyday tasks, such as walking, than someone who does not have a limb loss. Prosthetists, along with your physiotherapists, are there to make sure you are happy with your prosthesis and using it as efficiently and effectively as possible. If there is a specific activity you are thinking of doing, do not hesitate to ask any of the professionals that are on your team.

After limb loss and rehabilitation, it can be beneficial to develop a healthy lifestyle. Once you are used to your amputation and prosthetic limb there are many options to find a healthy lifestyle that works for you and your situation.

Some benefits to finding and maintaining a healthy lifestyle after limb loss include;

  • Fewer problems with your artificial limb

  • Building your endurance

  • Building muscle strength to use your artificial limb as proficiently as possible

  • Strong core muscles in leg amputees will help to improve gait and decrease back pain

  • Strong upper body muscles in arm amputees can help to keep their sound hand, elbow and shoulder flexible and strong

  • Physical activity can help reduce stress, anxiety and emotional distress

Along with regular exercise, being aware of what you are feeding your body is important. Food can be key in healing your body and decreasing your chance of diseases. A dietician can be a great resource to answer any questions you may have about proper nutrition.

It is important to remember that developing a healthy lifestyle after limb loss is a process. There will not be a quick and fast result. The key is to not become discouraged and to celebrate the small victories on your journey to feeling your best self.
